Press Release Date: July 24, 2001
Subj: WAP Sites and Applications for Mobile Devices Today, July 24, 2001, TactiCom launched active database driven WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) servers for development and hosting of WAP sites and applications. TactiCom now offers development, hosting, promotion and maintenance of WAP sites and applications, which can be accessed by WAP enabled devices such as mobile phones, pagers, personal digital assistants and other wireless devices.
About WAP
WAP, or Wireless Application Protocol, is the de facto worldwide standard for providing Internet communications and advanced telephone service on digital mobile phones, pagers, personal digital assistants and other wireless devices. WAP is now enabled on over 500 devices with new models being released every day. Manufacturers are expecting over 100 million compatible devices to be shipped worldwide by 2001. WAP is receiving extensive media coverage and is experiencing an explosive growth in a number of WAP enabled devices. Growth of WAP enabled devices far exceeds web enabled devices, as most new mobile phones are WAP enabled.
WAP is positioned to truly bring Internet to the mass market worldwide. The countries with the highest mobile phone ownership are Italy, Germany, Ireland and France. All of these countries have low computer ownership, with Germany being highest, ranked 15th in world. WAP enabled devices will be the primary method of Internet access for individuals in these countries.
WAP has been optimized to overcome challenges posed by these devices, such as limited display capabilities, narrow bandwidth, limited processing power, limited memory and CPU usage. WAP does not make any assumptions about the target client other than their size and bandwidth limitations. A common misconception is that WAP devices can view web sites. WAP pages are written in a different language than web pages and require a different server technology. Currently there are very few servers or development products on the market for deployment of Internet WAP services. The few products available seem to take web publishing approach, generating static pages as opposed to TactiCom's approach of developing active, dynamic applications which generate pages from live data in real time. This has resulted in relatively few web sites embracing the technology and providing WAP access, despite overwhelming support from wireless vendors and a rapidly expanding market.
TactiCom's WAP development services
TactiCom has developed proprietary technology that allows us to be one of first companies to offer development, hosting, promotion, and maintenance of WAP Internet and Intranet sites and applications. TactiCom has extended our current hosting, application library and development to bring all the advanced services we offer for Internet Web sites to the WAP environment. Our technology brings WAP to the mainstream and eliminates the tradeoffs and compromises normally associated with WAP Internet sites. TactiCom offers the following WAP services:
- Development, hosting, promotion and maintenance of WAP Internet sites and applications
- TactiCom can offer the same advanced technology as we offer for intranet and extranet web sites:
- Intranet & Extranet sites and applications
- Database driven sites
- Active / Dynamic sites
- Back-end administration systems for real time updating of information
- E-Commerce systems
- On-Line stores with shopping carts
- Your dot-com address is your WAP address (www.TactiCom.com is web and WAP address). No special pages or domains are required for WAP. Most WAP sites on the web require you to use a special WAP address such as:

WAP and your On-Line strategy ?
We believe it is important that WAP be a part of your on-line presence and marketing strategy. Some advantages of deploying this technology are as follows:
- Extend your business model by targeting a huge, untapped market of mobile customers.
- End users benefit by having ability to access your company data, maps and directions, contact information, and more without a land line, Internet connection, or even a computer from any location providing mobile service worldwide.
- Personnel and sales representatives can access your Intranet site (restricted access) to get the latest price lists, order status, production schedule, stock level and other company information.
- Position your company as a progressive organization that embraces new technology to increase market share, customer service, communication and reduce costs.
- WAP is being aggressively promoted and deployed by many major events and large companies such as sporting, financial reporting and tracking systems.
- Manufacturers are expecting over 100 million compatible devices to be shipped worldwide by 2001.
- WAP is implemented on many different hand-held digital wireless devices, such as mobile phones, pagers, two-way radios, smart phones, and communicators; it is backed by over 80% of mobile industry.
- WAP is a standardized protocol (like HTTP), it has the largest possible range of compatibility among devices. This technology will have a long life span and will no doubt carry over into next generation of mobile phones.
